Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers have been found to have a higher frequency than other breeds of certain serious diseases. They are:

  • Protein losing Enteropathy (PLE)
  • Protein losing Nephropathy (PLN)
  • Addison’s Disease

Recommendations to owners and their veterinarians includes:

Run the following lab tests:

  1. Complete Blood Count
  2. Biochemical profile, including:
    • Total Protein
    • Albumin
    • Creatine
    • Bun
    • Cholesterol
    • Sodium (Na)
    • Potassium (K)
  3. Routine Urinalysis, including:
    • Specific gravity
    • Dipstick
    • Urinary sediment
  4. Urine Protein/Creatinine Ratio

A good time to have the above testing done is the same time you are having the heartworm check.
