Are Wheatens Truly Hypoallergenic?
Question: I have allergies to dogs and my child has asthma so I need a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog.
Answer: Ah, the “Myth of the Hypoallergenic Wheaten.” No dog is truly hypoallergenic and a Wheaten is no exception. While many people with allergies or asthma have no problem living with a Wheaten, others have to make lifestyle changes and still others cannot tolerate a Wheaten. Remember you’ll be brushing and combing your Wheaten so your allergies may well act up. If the allergy is to dog saliva, as some dog allergies are, remember that Wheatens are big “kissers”. Also, because the coat attracts leaves, twigs and grasses, your Wheaten may be bringing other allergens into your house. Before bringing your Wheaten home, have your allergic family member spend significant time with one and even try some grooming to see how they react.
