In 1987, Gerry & I started our search for the
"perfect dog". We found the Wheaten Terrier & immediately fell in love.
Unfortunately we did not search enough because we got Willie from a less
than reputable breeder. Still enamored with the breed we joined the Motor
City Club in 1988. Beamer (our first perfect Wheaten) came in 1989. By
1990 we had our 3rd (Callie) and had upgraded to a van so that we could
transport everyone. We are now down to just 2 dogs, Cootie (7 year old
male) and Dharma (5 year old female).
With Dharma I am learning humility because I have never actually owned the
class clown.
I enjoy watching and having my dogs compete in
confirmation, but my first love is with the performance sports. I have
shown and titled in obedience and agility. I am currently training in
obedience, agility and rally obedience. I am also interested in herding
and tracking.
In the past few years we have gotten involved in
doing therapy work with our dogs. Both Cootie & Dharma are registered
therapy dogs and together we make several visits a month. This is probably
the most rewarding thing I do with my dogs.
I had always thought that breed clubs were only
for the "reputable" dogs. I am happy that I was proven wrong. We received
a lot of support and guidance with Willie's health and behavioral
problems. I think that it is important we all support our club and each
other. I have found that things tend to go full circle. Even though I was
on the board of directors several years ago, I don't think my
responsibility ends there. I think it is time that I used the knowledge
and experience that I have gained to help give owners the same support and
guidance that I was given 18 years ago.
